Telling her that they are staying in Calais for the present; describing a picnic by a stream and a day of boating; mentioning that he needs money but Charles Ward, the family's banker, is away; noting that he received a letter from Wilkie [Collins] announcing the completion of his book; discussing the death of Alfred Dickens; saying that he dreads returning to London because "there we are paupers -- abroad we are rich."
